  1. Dear Sir,

The Indian Coast Guard is the 4th Armed force of our country and is under MoD.Then why is it that the Ranking system in ICG is like Para-military??
Also, the ICG officers are not called Commissioned Officer. Why are they not treated as Military personnel when ICG is the 4th armed force??
The Constitution allows only military and academic titles to be prefixed to an individuals name. So in the case of ICG personnel its really unfair that they cant prefix their rank to their names!

In the U.S.A the Coast Guard have the same ranking structure as that of Navy.

Why is it so strange system in India. We call it the 4th Armed force but still dont treat it at par with the other 3 military system.

    1. Principally, Coast Guard was created for policing our maritime borders. A task akin to BSF's role on land boarders. The role encompasses primarily the internal dynamics and involves policing the citizens of the country. It is only complementary to the armed forces whose primary role is to defend India against foreign aggression.
    2. It has been placed under MoD for better coordination, command and control. And Rightly so, it is far ahead of BSF in terms of professionalism.
    3. I say again, it has a policing role in principle, therefore, can't claim to be an armed force.
    4. As far as 4th armed force is concerned, I feel that the time is right for India to raise a Marine Corps.
